Western New York, also referred to as Upstate New York, is the westernmost portion of New York State. It is a land of great scenic beauty, featuring many natural wonders, including the Finger Lakes, the Great Lakes of Ontario and Erie, and spectacular waterfalls, gorges and glens sculpted by glaciers. Including the cities of Buffalo, Rochester, and Niagara Falls, Western New York ...consists of four "sub-regions": the Greater Niagara Region (Niagara, Erie and Wyoming counties); the Genesee Region (Monroe, Livingston, Wayne, Wyoming, Orleans, Ontario and Yates counties); the Chautauqua–Allegheny Region (Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Allegany); and the western Finger Lakes Region (Seneca, Steuben, Schuyler, and Chemung counties). Western New York is home to a variety of colleges and universities, including Cornell University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Rochester, several SUNY campuses, and Syracuse University, as well as world-class museums such as The Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, the George Eastman House in Rochester, and the Erie Canal Museum in Lockport.
Erie, located on the south shore of Lake Erie and the county seat of Erie County, is named for the lake and the Native American Erie people who lived in the area until the mid-17th century. It is the fourth-largest city in Pennsylvania, as well as the largest city in northwestern Pennsylvania. Erie is halfway between Buffalo, New York, and Cleveland, Ohio, and is north of Pittsburgh. ...Though manufacturing still drives the local economy, health care, higher education, technology, service industries and tourism are emerging as well. During the summer, Erie is a popular vacation destination thanks to Presque Isle State Park and Waldameer Park. Erie is home to several performing arts groups, including the Erie Philharmonic, and the Lake Erie Ballet. The Erie Art Museum emphasizes folk art and modern art, and also participates in public art projects that improve the city. Downtown Erie's historic and ornate Warner Theatre is the hub of Erie's Civic Center, while the Erie Playhouse is one of the leading community theaters in the country, and the third oldest community theater in the U.S.
